Dylan Presley - Motion Design Portfolio

by dylnprsly on 31 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

Hey I'm Dylan Presley, a motion designer primarily focusing on stylized 3D. I find most inspiration in atmospheres that are curated with visuals and sound. Music is a massive part of my life, creating music videos and posters for local bands since I was 14.

Demo Reel

Hey I'm Dylan Presley, currently a motion design junior at Savannah College of Art and Design. I love craft little worlds, be it 2D, 3D, or both. What inspires me is atmosphere and the different morphing messages that an audience can get all from someone else's creation.  Hopefully you can get a taste of what I love in my Demo Reel, thanks.

The Nice House On The Lake Title Sequence

The concept for this project was to create a title sequence for a book. I chose the comic book 'The Nice House On the Lake'; A very contemporary and constrained comic for most Super Man books published by DC Comics.  I wanted to illustrate this in the title, using the slow and beautiful pacing you see in most title sequences today. Speaking of illustrate, I loved the panels in 'The Nice House On the Lake' by Alvaro Martinez, crafting painterly and abstract pages that heighten the contemporary tone of the book. And that's why I chose this pseudo tactile art style.

One of the key concepts in the comic is its architecture, designed by one of the '12' characters trapped inside this house. The house represents the people stuck inside, and the black brutalist building is the one who trapped them there (trying not to spoil, I swear). I chose the house sinking into the black void because it shows motifs of this alien house that is a metaphor of the controlling friend. The central character 'The Painter'  was trapped inside this building and it narrates the controlling nature of their friend, the one who trapped them all there in the first place.

Thank you to @Tradigital who helped me with this effect and his tutorial-

Animal Collective Music Video - Defeat

With help from Himani Todi, We created a visualizer to accompany the song 'Defeat' by Animal Collective.

The original song highlights the inherent connection us humans have with nature. We drafted the idea of man made technologies (computers and 3D programs), combining with naturalistic tactile forms (Charcoal and Paints). Hopefully that shines through along with the experimental nature of the song also matching our mish mash of many forms into this piece.

Second Hand Wings

An intro cinematic for a retro video fully concepted, composed, and visualized by me. Primarily crafted in After Effects and Blender.

Taking inspiration from surrealism in early computer media, oil derricks of the early 1900s, all wrapped up in a apocalyptic setting. The story revolves around you, the main character being the machine crafted from oil rigs in a Biopunk expedition as you help rid the world of its plague that you were crafted from.

Concepting

here is my storyboard and the script that you see along the ideation process. Originally I had an idea for this organic cross shaped logo but later scraped it because of little connection to the actual universe, opting for more in-universe title screen and my personal logo.

The 3D Scene

Inspired by old games like Fallout and Doom. I wanted to create this gritty surreal universe of humans that have been modified by oil, and this scene embodies that.  Why are they in the dirt and modifying this guys guts all in front of a city on fire? Because its the 90's.

Eye Effect

Creating the iris morphing into two was a challenging process that was a digital mishmash of what I had around me and I thought it turned out exactly how I wanted it, Gritty and the linear animation of the 90's.

Music and Vocal Composition

With a background in music the audio editing in FL studio was pretty natural for me. I used a lot of bit crushing and 'retro' synth sounds to help heighten the mood of the piece even further.
