Here is my entry for the Rookie Awards 2024. A collection of props I created during my years as a Game Art student, all in a handpainted style.

Hello, my name is Anaïs Mureddu and I'm a French Concept Artist / 3D Artist, currently studying Game Art at Game Sup, Lyon.

Mystery Compass

I've been learning 3D for almost 4 years now. Even If I aspire to be a concept artist, I enjoy a lot turning my own concepts into props ! Making this compass from the concept art to the final render was so much fun !

When I created the concept, it was supposed to be a PBR model. I wasn't happy with the result in the end. I wanted to try something different so I started over during my free time to make it a full handpainted asset.

I tried handpaint for the first time and I really enjoyed the process ! I used 3D Coat to do it.

I learn a lot about lighting when I'm handpainting props. Because I have to think about lighting not from one angle, but from everyone of them, I think it helps me improve  my technique in 2D as well. It's a lot more challenging and I'm still learning how to do it !

Breakfast Board

Why don't you take a break to enjoy a cozy breakfast ?

This was such a nice project. The goal was to experiment with handpaint and Zbrush  to learn how to make food appealing. And now I want to make even more breakfasts boards !

To make it seem as tasty as possible, I really took my time on the sculpting and texturing parts. It could have been more optimised, but I decided to keep a fair amount of divisions to make the food more roundish and appealing. I baked on substance painter to have some details to begin with. For the texture, I added touches of purple and pink in my colors to give a tastier appearance. It's really the nuances that will make the viewer attracted or revulsed by the food.

Dealing with transparency was a huge difficulty, and, even if the result is not perfect, I think I kind of managed to make something out of it.

I did this project on my own time, and it was really fun and enriching to create since I never drew of modeled food in 3D !

Diorama

3D Diorama made 3 years ago, inspired by the 2D "Tree Crow" of Laurence Viollet !

The process of making this tree was kind of new to me. I was used to hard surface modeling but to sculpt this tree I used Zbrush, more precisly Zspheres to make the shape of the tree.

The texture is a mix between PBR and handpaint. I wasn't aware handpaint was a technique back then so I was trying my best on substance painter but if I had to make it again, it would be optimised and I would do a full handpaint texture on 3D Coat ! I prefer 3D coat because it's closer to photoshop so it's more convenient to me. I would also do the grass differently, with more hand placed cards or the foliage tool in UE5.

Here is the original concept from Laurence Viollet.

Thank you for your attention
