My first year of archviz

by evelinaclasborn on 21 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

Hi! My name is Evelina and I'm currently studying 3D architectural visualization at Yrgo, Gothenburg. Hope you enjoy my work!

About

These are some of the projects I completed during my first year as a archviz student. Please note that I had no prior experience or knowledge of working with arkviz or the associated programs. However, over the eight months of study, I found myself thoroughly enjoying it.

I hope you enjoy browsing through what you see below!

Urban Architecture

During this project, we had the opportunity to collaborate with Miller Hare. We were provided with one of their previous projects to create compelling marketing images.

The project was situated in Kings Cross, London. They supplied us with the basic building model, leaving us to determine the materials, camera angles, lighting, and overall concept. Given the vastness of Kings Cross, the class was divided into three groups, each assigned to a different location. I was tasked with Coal Drops Yard, witch is a retail area.

The building's roof played a significant role in its architecture, and I aimed to capture its shape and symmetry accurately. It was equally important to portray the shops and bustling activity within the vicinity convincingly.

In three weeks, this is the result I ended up with.

Modeling

During this project, the brief was to model an already existing chair of our choice, from scratch. With pictures and very simple 2D drawings as references. The chair should be textured appropriately and rendered both in a simple studio setup and in an advertisement image.

I chose to model the "Utility Armchair V" designed by neri&hu.

The hotel

This project was the first one to be assigned to the class as a group project, which is an important part of working in this industry.

Each group was tasked with a specific city where the hotel was supposed to be built in, and given a selection of rooms to visualize.

My teammates and I were assigned the privilege of designing sections of a hotel located in Edinburgh, Scotland. Together, we determined that I would focus on visualizing the spa area, while my partners tackled the lobby, restaurant, and guest rooms. We had four weeks to complete this project.

The Villa

Throughout this project, we worked from CAD drawings provided by Alingsås huspaket. Our task entailed crafting visually appealing and accurate images based on the selected drawings, situating them within the Scandinavian landscape. We were given some artistic freedom in the choice of light and materials. Additionally, we had the opportunity to acquaint ourselves with new tools like V-Ray, Rail Clone, and Forest Pack.

In the beginning of the project we had a meeting with an architect, to illustrate how the cooperation between the visualizer and the architect can be in real work situations.

This was my first time to practice exterior images, and also to use V-ray render, forest pack and rail clone. After three weeks of working with this, I ended up with the following result.

The renovation

The goal of the project was to create selling images for a house on the market in need of renovation.

The brief of the project was to compile a moodboard tailored to a specific target audience. The modeling primarily focuses on the room, with props mainly consisting of pre-made 3D models. The purpose was using basic knowledge of software, architecture, moodboards, and design, to learn to create interior visualizations and justify the design choices.

I chose "The newly formed family" as a target audience, and wanted house to feel classic meanwhile making it look renovated and new.

This is my results after two weeks of working on this project.

Abstraction

This was the first project during my education.

Abstraction involves sifting through one's impressions, disregarding certain attributes, and highlighting the most important aspects.

The brief of the project was to choose an artwork, analyze the colors, mood, and style. By analyzing the interplay between color, form and light, compile a moodboard that clearly depicts the concept. With the help of the moodboard, build a simple room in 3Ds Max.

I chose a painting by Henri Martin called "Canal in Venice".

Matte Painting

The task at hand was to visualize an AI-generated building in a realistic environment using Photoshop.

In this project, composition was more important than details; not getting caught up on specific materials or functions. Form, light, and color took precedence over everything. We were given a specific type of building and a landscape to relate to.

I got "pavilion" as the building and "park" as the landscape.

The concept was nailed down early by submitting four proposals that the class voted on. These proposals had to be clearly different, considering factors like time and season. The landscape had to adhere to the type that had been assigned. The task was to create a more detailed image based on the proposal that the class liked the most.
