Environment Concept Designs

The following are numerous science fiction environment pieces using Blender 3D and Adobe Photoshop.

The intention behind these scenes, were so they could be developed for a wide-shot matte-painting. I wanted to think about the people around/within the "Furnace" and I was inspired by the fly-in/fly-out engineers working in the mines today. Some FIFO engineers described it as working in "Mordor", so with a dash of star wars, and love of science-fiction, behold a new meaning of "working within a furnace".

In my thumbnails, the first image featured a core "hub" but I had to alter the design as there was too much conflict of interest; I wanted the audience to move through the scene more.

Chaos in the skies have consequences on the ground, using my goal for this scene was to create a sense of cause and effect. I wanted my vehicles to be connecting with the environment around it and have a sense of movement; both with the buggy in the foreground and the falling starship.

Has your space ship fallen from the sky? Well coming to the rescue is a ground team specialising in recovery and clean up! No matter what the weather is!

Trying to find the balance between organised chaos and a readable scene is always a tricky line to walk but I enjoy the challenge! In the "Ground Zero" environments, I am once more working on my sense of movement and chaos. To bring life into my scene, I relied heavily on the rain and fog to create atmosphere; additionally using the helicopter blades to add movement.

Animated and intended for a Matte Painting, introducing the archaic, desolated city of Astruva.

Vehicle Design

Salahi

Inspired by the Phantom Menace underwater sequence, Salahi is designed to travel the dark depths of the ocean, while blending in with its fish-like neighbours. Designed after manta-rays, this ship is intended to have a dynamic, clean, alien look. In alternative designs, I drew inspiration from sea creatures such as swordfish, flying fish, whales and real life sailboats used in the Olympics.
