Maurine Poncelet - 3D Artist Portfolio

Maurine PONCELET
by MaurineP on 20 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

Once again this year, I am participating to showcase the work I have done in my personal time since graduating from school. I am a junior 3D artist specializing in modeling and texturing, but I am quite polyvalent in other domains as well.

Marie and the Sweet Sorcery

"Marie, a gourmet witch's apprentice, finds herself clinging to her accidentally bewitched broom."

Marie's Character

Marie is a somewhat clumsy young witch. I truly fell in love with Hong SoonSang's original concept. It was important for me to preserve the charm of the 2D model. The lookdev was done using Maya/Arnold, and everything was then assembled in compositing on Nuke.

Character Modeling

The character was fully modeled in Maya, from the body to the clothing. My main goal at this stage was to create a topology that allows proper deformation of the face and body. However, the biggest challenge was modeling the hair.

Blendshapes

Marie has a very expressive face. It was crucial for the 3D to accurately reflect her very 2D-like emotions. The most challenging aspect with blendshapes is anticipating how shadows will be drawn on the final render. The animation test was done by Lucas Retif.

Set and Props

I wanted to imagine a cozy and colorful environment. The concepts of Svetlana Solnyshkina and Nastya B were initial sources of inspiration for creating some assets, contributing to the ambiance of this forested small cabin set. I used hand-painting in Substance Painter to maintain the drawn aspect.

Final Rendering

It was very long. I believe it was the most complex stage, and also the most determining for the final shot's aesthetic. I had to make several manual adjustments to the shadows, which weren't perfect in every frame. The integration of animation and 2D FX by Lucas Retif greatly helped the clarity of the shot and added the magical touch of the scene.

Short Film

I am truly proud of this project. It has been a great learning experience, and I thoroughly enjoyed working in a style that holds a special place in my heart. Hoping you like it too!

More Works

Applin FanArt

I made this little Pokemon to explore a new artistic style and it was so much fun! I sculpted and retopologized it, then hand-painted to add texture. The painting effect was achieved using alpha planes to break the 3D model's lines and the final look was rendered with Arnold.

Cash Register

I created a stylized cash register using a realistic shader workflow. I worked on all aspects except for the animation. It was my first time creating textures entirely in Mari, although I used Substance Painter for baking my high-poly. The original concept belongs to the artist Tantav.

I wanted to bring this prop to life a bit more by requesting an animation from Lucas Retif to highlight its functionality. Thanks to him!
