by JanEsterhuyzen on 13 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

My name is Jan Esterhuyzen. I am a visual artist who specializes in concept art and illustration. I am a graduate from The Animation School and recent graduate from Friends of Design - Academy of Digital Arts. The following is a miscellany of different projects I've worked on over the years.

Round of applause for our sponsors

REVOLVING RIFLE

As part of one of our asset design modules at the Academy of Digital Arts, we were required to design a handheld asset for an existing IP. Being a long standing fan of the Fallout franchise I chose to design a rifle counterpart to the Ranger Sequoia that was based off of the Colt 1855 model.

MANJUSHA

This is a redesign of a character that I initially designed for a short graphic novel as part of a group project during my second year at The Animation School, where I was allotted the task of designing a portion of the novel's cast of characters.

The story of Manjusha is that she is basically a goddess who presides over an agrarian society of extraterrestrial beings, blessing them with prosperity in exchange for their reverence.

The original design and its overall quality I find somewhat embarrassing, but it serves well to show how much I've improved in the past 2-3 years.

THE MASTER

A digital painting that I did during my free time, it was my attempt at reimagining one of  the Fallout franchise's most iconic villains.

THE LOADSHEDDER

This is a slasher type character that I personally designed as a satirical jab at South Africa's power crisis and consequent rolling blackouts, or popularly known as Loadshedding.

Overall aesthetic was inspired by the composition style of concept art for Resident Evil 4 Remake.

FRANK HORRIGAN

One of my assignments at the Academy of Digital arts required us to do an illustration piece depicting whatever situation from an existing IP. For this I decided to illustrate Fallout 2's main antagonist, Frank Horrigan effortlessly slaying deathclaws in vault 13 as seen in one of the game's cutscenes. His herculean feats and his nature as an indomitable force of the Enclave makes him my favorite character in the whole franchise and this was for me a very fun project to work on.

ELEKTRA

One of many works I have done in my spare time, this is a digital redesign of Marvel's Elektra #3 comic book cover which was originally illustrated by Greg Horn.

Cover Version

GORDON FREEMAN

I decided to challenge my overall abilities as an artist by doing a hyper realistic portrait of Half Life protagonist, Gordon Freeman. I personally judge the final result as satisfactory and even decided to turn them into variant covers of the franchise's two main entries.

As an artist who is multifaceted, I like to often shift between art styles as I feel that it ensures versatility  and adaptivity. I often work with line art on the side as I feel like it captures the dynamism of scenes more conspicuously.

ED, EDD & EDDY

Despite being one of my first major illustrations and thus somewhat outdated, this is still my best and most popular fanart piece in terms of having the most likes on every platform that I posted it; I would feel negligent for not putting it on here.

NEMESIS

A tribute to the survival horror genre's most iconic villain, I felt a hankering to do a stylized piece based off of production art for Resident Evil 3: Nemesis depicting the aftermath of an encounter with the eponymous character.

WALTER WHITE

Breaking Bad fanart that I did the year prior, with and without the sepia filter characteristic of the show.

DUKE NUKEM

A recent piece of fanart that I did dedicated to  one of the greatest first person shooter games from the 90's.

More of my work can be found on my  Artstation and Instagram.
