Après Papi and Tess VS Wild - Axel Sence - Lookdev/Lighting/Compositing
Hi ! For this entry I present to you my work on my graduation short Après Papi done at MoPA and Tess VS Wild which is a beautiful short stop-motion project I had the amazing opportunity to comp. Have great read !
APRES PAPI
I'm proud to present my graduation short : Après Papi.
It's a moving short about a young boy that learns to deal with grief.
On this project I was in charge of the lookdev/lighting/rendering/compositing.

SOME SHOTS BREAKDOWN :
STILLS WITH CLAY AND EARLY LIGHTING
SATISFYING SLIDERS TO COMPARE THE FINISHED AND EARLY IMAGES
Below is a recording of me playing with some lights, toggling them on one by one to show how it is build :
We used upscaling for faster render time and thus a better ability to iterate. This step was fully integrated in our workflow : First the comp was made on 720p EXR's until all the operations requiring AOVS were done ( dof, cryptomatte, positon matte, etc ...) then we upscaled the footage and finally we applied the final touches such as camera effects ( glow, vignetting, grain etc ), grading etc.
Then we used Topaz to upscale to 1440p :
Just below is a record of the comp tree I made for our graduation short. I made custom nodes and used rigging with expressions to have a more efficient workflow.
TESS VS WILD
Tess VS Wild is a short stop-motion film made in collaboration with the Paillettes collectif ( @pailletes_collectif on instagram ).
It's a lovely short about the first outdoor camping experience of Tess.
I had a blast comping this project. It was my first experience with live footage and stop motion especially so I learned a lot and I loved it. Thanks again to them for giving me this beautiful opportunity !

Some shot breakdowns :
I made a comp tree with some custom nodes to solve some of our problems especially concerning the cleaning of the plate ( artifacts/flickering...). I loved coming up with answers for our problems and learning about the workflow/techniques for keying/despill/roto etc
I hope you had a great time going through this post and I wish you a good day ! Thanks !!
