Hi~ My name is Haze Nguyen. I'm a curious artist, designer and animator. I love color and work humor into my personal work. As a detail-oriented and concept driven designer, I'm not afraid of trying new styles.

The Floor Is Lava

Role: Creative Director, Story, Design, Animation

There is something magical in the mindset of play. Learning without fears and conditions bring out the most creative and intuitive ideas. Children say the most out-of-pocket things and imagine constant multipurpose in the things around them. Astronauts got to space without knowing how to get to space, explorers traveled without knowing where they would end up, inventors made things that were never real before. Embrace the weird, the curious, the ‘trust in the process’ and live life with a sense of wonder.

Concept & Story

Origin   |  I started this project, wanting to focus on the concept before anything visual. Why do I always dread growing up? Why do I worry about the future, and look fondly at my past?

Inspiration   |   I spend a lot of time with extended family. Cousins my age, and many younger cousins. As crazy as my younger cousins can get, sometimes I catch them saying something really insightful, then really silly. They play. learn and speak their own truth.

Intention   |   I realized that that mindset is what makes creation and happiness, The more you think it, the more you believe it. So having a project to work on with this message and topic would influence me and remind of an outlook I want to have, an energy I want to embody.

CoMotion 2024

Role: Designer and Animator

CoMotion is a student-run motion graphics conference where industry professionals are invited to speak on panels and give 1-on-1 portfolio reviews with students. A team of 40 students are chosen to make an opening title sequence highlighting attending companies, as well as branding package deliverables used throughout the event. As part of the design team I was responsible for designing style frames for the title sequence, pitching Instagram grid layouts, and the stage graphics for panel discussions.

Style Frame Processes

Imagery from the storyboard was more vague, so I was able to test out different compositions and research scientific components that I wanted to pull from.  I created a more structured grid that the other frames I was assigned could follow, and centering the main DNA as it would be composited as a 3D animation. All the assets would become messy so I leaned into the rule of thirds and playing with grid details. I went through many iterations per shot to manipulate gobos and textures so that main elements would stand out.

Instagram Grid Pitch

All 8 designers on our team pitched different designs from the 4 styles, or chapters, in the title sequence.  Since there was a heavy emphasis on scientific illustration, I thought it would be good to used pressed flowers and grid lines for analysis as the main elements.

Logo Resolves: Airbnb, Liunic On Things, NewJeans

Role: Design, Animation, Sound

Airbnb

Compared to hotels, Airbnb is a welcoming experience that makes travel feel like home, whatever it may look like. To highlight the housing and activities that Airbnb provides, this end tag animation shows the uniqueness of each stay while pairing sound to give imagination to the feeling of a satisfied customer.

Liunic On Things

Liunic On Things is a brand that commercializes illustration into fashion and accessories. It’s playful, fun, spunky and colorful. I such a fan of doodle style art, and had to do it justice. I worked on a sound design that captures the spunky punch of color and fun Liunic On Things is made of. I ran with the texture of the logo to transform it’s animation, and kept the rest simple.

NewJeans

New Jeans is a group of singers who bring cool back into y2k. They are famous for having a fresh look and sound within the Korean music industry despite having heavy influence from history. They are on top of trends, snappy and energetic. Translating this into the logo I focused on the motion leading up to it to create the final logo resolve.
