During my last year of school I started a personal project on my free time. I wanted to have fun and make appealing characters ! The aim of this exercise was to make production ready 3D in Blender.

During my last year of school I started a personal project (alongside working on a short film for my graduation). I wanted to have fun on my free time and create a production ready character myself. I ended up making three. Let's meet them !

Softwares used:

Clip Studio Paint - Concept

Blender - Modeling, sculpting, shading, lighting, rigging, rendered with Cycles

Adobe Substance Painter - Texturing

Concept and references

I listened to song "Fighting" by BSS a lot during 2023, it expresses words of encouragement for young people with a joyful tone. Exactly what I needed !

Aiming to do something cute and energetic, it's obvious that a cartoony art style mixed with chibi was the right thing to do !

The main points in these concept are hair and clothes. The body stay the same and the face will change with blendshapes so it's all about copy and paste.

Modeling and sculpting

Delete the blender default cube and get started. The goal here was to make three different characters but with the same base. As you can see heads are almost the same and shoes are exactly the same. As for the hair it was made with curves !

Four types of shapes were used for the curves, from detailed NURBS circles to really simple ones for single hair strands.

For the topology it was important to keep it simple as I wanted to rig it later ! Only the hair has lots of subdiv because of the curves but it won't be fully rig and will be bind to the head bone to move.

Shading and lookdev

The next step was to go in substance painter and well ... paint !

The challenge here was mostly for the fabric ! Even if the velvety fabric was partly done with hair particles !

Some shaders were re-done in Blender. For exemple I painted the SSS tickness map in Blender's texture paint mode.

Hair and eyes are procedural shaders !

Posing

Basic rig made with blender's meta rig ! Works just great for my project !

First posing test I did with the rig. Mostly to see if everything worked as I wanted.

I used blendshapes for each face ! From blinking to smiles !

Lighting

HDRI + Sun / Fill light / Rim light

Details

I added representative emoticons to finish the images. The tree are lockscreen size so it had to be fun and colorful to look at !

It was comp with blender as well ! But didn't added much as I wasn't going for a cinematic look.

Thank you for reading !
