Joceline 2024 - Koala Zombie Hunter Girl, Club

by jocco on 1 Jun 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

Hi, I'm a recent graduate of Think Tank Training Centre (Online) and this is my first time entering the Rookies. These are two of my projects from my time there. Thanks for looking!

Hi! These are two of my projects from my time at Think Tank Training Centre (Online).

This was my mentorship project from my last term at TTO. I really like Rinotuna's work and wanted to make a 3D model of one of her characters. I ended up choosing the Koala Zombie Hunter Girl (https://www.artstation.com/artwork/B15284).

This was originally going to be modeled as a game character (as that was my discipline), but looking at the concept, my mentor and I decided it might be better to render her as a figurine. It was definitely thanks to his guidance that it could take on such a realistic feel.

The stickers and labels were done in Illustrator as I wasn't sure how big I would actually need them to be, so wanted them scalable.

I sculpted almost everything in ZBrush, with a little bit of Marvelous Designer for the clothes, but did the hard surface stuff like the bottles, buttons and IV pole in Maya. The pigtails were started with one giant blob each, plus a lot of strands on top, then sculpted to actually look like hair. The scarf tassels were done in a similar fashion, each tassel and knob being a separate object. After all the pieces were done, I took them into Maya to retopologize.

For the pedestal, I was thinking of a sort of post apocalyptic environment, so the top is modeled after hospital tiles and I added some leaves as if the hospital is in the process of being taken over by nature.

For texture references, I looked online as well as some nearby stores to check out the figurines and study the materials. The whole thing is meant to look like plastic, but I differentiated between the base material plastic, the more glossy plastic for the coat trim, the metal parts and the transparent plastic for the IV bag. I also went with a more weathered look rather than a brand new figurine.

Color - Roughness -  Normal - Curvature

This was my final project from my Intermediate Term at Think Tank, based on the concept by GaĆ«lle Mazeau--Triaut (https://www.artstation.com/artwork/klBezl). I loved the design and Alice in Wonderland vibes, so I really wanted to try making it in 3D.

I did everything apart from the concept. I sculpted almost everything exclusively in ZBrush except for the skirt, which I started in Maya first. It was easier to get the circular shape and panels set up that way.

These are some of the UVs. Bottom row is AO, top is normals. Unfortunately, I didn't know to orient them all the same way until it was too late.

The textures were done in Substance Painter and rendered in Marmoset Toolbag. I tried to match the lighting with the original piece, highlighting the character and letting the cards fade into the background. I wanted the metallic bits to stand out a bit, so I made sure they were positioned to catch the light.

For the finishing touches, I took the final render into Photoshop, cropped it and added the glow on the sword and border.
