Lost Echoes

I WISH GOODBYES WERE JUST DREAMS.

[Created in January-May 2024]

Delving into the intricacies of dreams, I envisioned them as onion-layered stages, shaped by personal experiences, echoes of joyous aspirations and concealed fears, symbolizing the forgotten chapters of our subconscious. 

This film was done for my Undergraduate Senior Capstone at Savannah College of Art and Design, my final work before I graduate in Motion Media Design. I wanted my final film to be something very personal and introspective at the same time. 

The concept of "lost echoes" was born out of a poetic reflection on the lingering nature of dream memories, suggesting that these nocturnal impressions softly reverberate in the recesses of the mind, much like faint echoes that persist in silence. This metaphor lends a delicate touch to the profound impact dreams can have on our waking consciousness.

This narrative is not merely an exploration of dreams but a personal odyssey delving into the layers of the subconscious, a reflection on the delicate nuances of the mind, and an intimate journey of how and why my dreams carry my innermost thoughts and emotions.

My Dream Journals // The Inspiration

I found myself consistently dreaming during moments of calm, when stress and exhaustion are absent, and life unfolds in its routine simply. In these instances, my dreams tend to take on an unusual and eventful nature, prompting me to ponder their significance. Why do these dreams manifest? Could they be reflections of my deepest desires - longings I wasn't aware of, or perhaps desires that my subconscious hesitated to acknowledge consciously?

While re-reading my dream journals, I discovered a recurring pattern in the dreams I vividly recall- they often center around my close family and relatives engaging in seemingly mundane activities together. However, there are instances where the emotional impact of a dream remains intense, even if the details elude my memory upon waking. In one such semi-lucid dream, I could control my actions and interactions, yet the overwhelming emotion stemmed from a poignant realization- my own death. 

As a disembodied soul, I observed my family's reactions without their awareness, prompting profound reflections on the fears that may underlie these dreams. Could they be manifestations of my deepest desires or unacknowledged fears? The fear of parting from my family, the anxiety of being excluded and the dread of missing out on their growth while living abroad? Having returned to my home country, Indonesia after 4 years during my school break intensified these emotions, unveiling the growing distance and fear that, the longer i stay away, the more detached I become from the familial bonds I cherish.

THE PROCESS

The majority of this film was crafted using Cinema 4D and Redshift, with extensive compositing and post-production effects applied in After Effects. 

Throughout the pre-production phase, I delved into various lighting configurations and color schemes to shape the film's aesthetic. The styleframes below offer a glimpse into my creative journey, showcasing the exploration of diverse moods through techniques like volumetric fog, varied materials, and more.

Below are some wireframe renders from the earlier stages of production:

UNREAL ENGINE EXPERIMENTATION: 

I experimented with Unreal Engine to visualize the scenes with the bedroom, aiming to differentiate the shots depicting reality (presented in various aspect ratios) from those existing within the dream world. I considered using a different render engine apart from C4D'sRedshift to evoke a distinct atmosphere. Hence, I replicated the bedroom setup in both C4D and Unreal Engine to assess their coherence and potential contrasts. While the Unreal shots ultimately didn't make it into the final cut due to time constraints, feasibility concerns, and maintaining overall cohesion, the exploration of Unreal Engine was an enjoyable and enlightening aspect of my creative process.


SOUND DESIGN PROCESS

The Sound Designer, Alex Han, and I collaborated closely to achieve the desired sound and music for this film. We utilized Frame.io to upload her work-in-progress (WIP) files, allowing me to pinpoint specific timestamps and provide clear feedback on what aspects were effective and where improvements could be made. This streamlined communication ensured that we were aligned on the vision and enabled us to refine the audio to meet the film's needs. Sound was a very important aspect in this film, so we were glad that it turned out well!

SYM Beauty

[Created in April-May 2024]

SYM Beauty is a skincare brand created by Earny Karnasuta, a student studying Beauty & Fragrance at SCAD for her senior capstone. She brought me into the team to conceptualize and create a Motion Design commercial for her brand. This was a huge collaboration between Industrial Designers, UX Designers, Graphic Designers, Copywriters, and Photographers, to create cohesive and consistent deliverables for the brand. 

I worked closely with Earny, the Industrial Designer who modeled and created the 3 products, Christy Kurniawan, the Copywriter for my piece, Stef Baracaldo, and Sound Designer Alex Han.

I developed a pitch deck for the motion design deliverable, not only to articulate the concept effectively but also to deepen my understanding of the underlying story and conduct research on the target audience.

"SYM Beauty is a skincare brand that aims to raise the standard of what it means to be accessible- navigable through touch, sound, smell, or sight. They aim to be a final pioneer of the skincare accessibility problem, creating a universal system that is truly accessible in every way."

The brand stands at the intersection of Symbolism, Simplicity, and Sense. All tied into one concept, that is Symply Accessible. The 3 products focused on this launch are a cleanser, serum and a moisturizer. 

THE CONCEPT

I was assigned to create a motion design-centered commercial with my own creative direction. To highlight the launch of this brand, the motion design piece centers on its unique backstory - the importance of transcending braille to embrace beauty accessible to the visually impaired. It delves into the myriad of senses beyond sight, enriched by tranquil and calming soundscapes. 

Additionally, a touch of technological advancement is woven throughout, reflecting the brand's commitment to incorporating cutting-edge technologies to enhance the accessibility of their offerings. 

The design aesthetic is both soothing and minimalist, yet will carry an air of sophistication and a modern quality.

THE PROCESS

It was an enjoyable journey to discover the optimal and most efficient workflow between the industrial designer's models created in Rhino, which I then imported into C4D for rendering with Redshift. Additionally, our team included another industrial designer responsible for Keyshot renders. However, because the Keyshot renders didn't seamlessly integrate with my motion piece utilizing Redshift, effective communication among team members became crucial. We coordinated closely to ensure that my own Redshift materials and renders aligned seamlessly with their final prototypes and Keyshot renders for her final presentation, maintaining consistency across the project.

Brewing Wonders

[Created in September-October 2023]

This project was a pitch presented for the CoMotion 2024 branding competition, which was a joint effort between Isabelle Kalyn and I. CoMotion is a student-led motion design conference that happens every year, where Motion Media Design students at the Savannah College of Art and Design participate in a two-day event to engage and learn from top industry professionals.

Our envisioned concept is to craft an identity that captures the transformative CoMotion experience, where we wholeheartedly embrace motion design within a diverse and all-encompassing environment. At the heart of our human nature resides the longing to establish connections and strengthen bonds, both with ourselves and through interactions with others. Motion design emerges as a potent conduit that can satisfy this inherent desire.

*Hence, we aspire for the concept and its aesthetics to exude fearlessness while maintaining a playful essence, symbolizing the vibrant and interactive relationships we cultivate during the event itself, with professionals in the industry and fellow students.

Our approach seamlessly blends elements of both 3D and 2D design, ensuring that every student in the motion design department can participate, learn, evolve, and contribute to the development of our unique style as integral members of the branding team.
