Terror - The Fear of Death

Tom Louis Kühne
by TKuehneART on 28 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

This is "Terror" my 3rd semester game art project. In one Semester I created this fully rigged and game ready creature. I had a lot of fun working on this project and learning the workflow to create a game ready character model. Ask me about what kind of creature Terror is and I will gladly explain!

Showcase Render (UE5)

This is the final Result of the Project, which I am very proud of. It was my first time ever making a 3D Character model.
The Large stone in the Diorama was also created by me. I got the small stones from Turbosquid to make the scene look less empty.

Short Animation

Since I wanted to pose Terror on the rock for the Trailer, there was not really a way around rigging it. So I decided to make a small animation as well.

Marmoset Viewer

The textures are scaled down a bit to make the file the right size.

Data Sheet

Here, one can see the Wireframe and Rig of my creature.

The Rig is relatively simple. I used an IK-Spine for the tail, so that I have full control. For each of the arms I created an IK/FK Switch, while controlling the fingers with Driven Keys. The rest is a rather standard FK setup with IK-Legs of course.

Textures & UVs

I used 3D Substance Painter exclusively for the textures of this project. Since it supports UDIMs very well it was a natural choice for me. I wanted to make shure that it would give a good illusion of detail, so I used 10 UDIMs in total. This also helped me reduce visible seams on the body.
Below are a breakdown of the textures in Substance 3D and the UV Layout.

Concept Art

I will end this post with the start of it all: the concept art.

In my free time I like to write and worldbuild, so I had plenty of ideas for creatures and characters. Although I created Terror as a Piece for my studies at the SAE Institute in Hannover, it really was a passion project.
The concept art below is also from myself, it was what I Imagined when I started the project. I hade to make some adjustments along the way though, like splitting the pectoralis plates from the spikes between the shoulders and neck.

I am very satisfied with this project considering my short time (1,5 years) in the 3D Art studies.
