Weapon Artist - Jacky Le

by Jacky on 24 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

These are the works I've created as I pursue my goal of becoming a weapon artist in the video game industry. I'm excited to share them with you!

Cadex Defense CDX-R7 Field Competition Rifle

This rifle was made for my mentorship term at Think Tank Training Centre from October 2023 to February 2024, with guidance and instruction from my mentor, Sendoa Bergasa.

Breakdown

First the rifle was SubD modeled in Maya to create the high poly version, then a low poly was made from that.

Afterwards, the two models were baked in Marmoset Toolbag to transfer details from the high poly model onto the low poly. Once it was done being textured in Substance Painter, it was lit and rendered in Marmoset Toolbag.

The excessively large scope mount, the MDT Sky High Scope Mount, was unused in final renders.

M4A1 Mil Spec Bolt Carrier Group

I wanted to learn CAD to expand upon my abilities, so I modeled this entirely in Autodesk Fusion 360. When the model is done, a high poly is exported into ZBrush to refine edges. In ZBrush, the model is dynameshed, smoothed along edges, and then decimated to reduce the poly count. For the low poly, a low poly version of the model is exported out of Fusion 360, and then retopologized in Maya to have good edge flow and reduced poly count, once that was done, it was UV unwrapped in Maya. Finally, the model is baked in Marmoset Toolbag and then textured in Substance Painter.

I was able to get this part in person for texture and modeling reference, so a majority of the texturing was hand painted to try to match perfectly with the real world object.

Holosun HS403R Red Dot Sight

Red dot sight by Holosun, featuring a 2 MOA red dot, using the Aimpoint Micro mounting footprint.

This was modelled fully in Fusion 360. When the modeling was finished, it was retopologized and UV'd in Maya to make the low poly, while the high poly was refined in ZBrush. The low poly and high poly were then baked in Marmoset Toolbag 4, and then textured in Substance Painter.

AR-15 Work In Progress

This has been in the works for months, primarily utilizing Fusion 360 to model most of the components, with Maya being used when I couldn't make it in Fusion. Some of my previous works, such as, the Huxwrx Muzzle Brake, M4A1 Bolt Carrier Group, and the Holosun HS403R, were made for this AR-15 project.

My end goal for this AR-15, is to be able to create every component and match it to the real world dimensions as close as I can. This has proven to be a significantly lengthy challenge, forcing me to remodel parts, compromising with some dimensions, and to exhaustingly study references.

All of these projects were made using the high to low poly baking workflow and are made in PBR.
